Professional development on performance footwear
This workshop is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of performance footwear.
The class brings shoe manufacturing, design, and construction expertise of Arsutoria to Portland.
Participants will embark on an in-depth journey, covering every stage of the shoemaking process:
- Shoe last analysis to understand fit and functionality.
- Upper design and an exploration of diverse upper materials.
- Outsole analysis, examining both technical and aesthetic characteristics.
- Insights into the mould-making process and the creation of outsoles.
The program culminates in a hands-on shoemaking experience in the Sports Product Management Innovation Lab, where attendees will bring their knowledge to life by crafting their own prototype.

Course curriculum
Fundamentals on shoemaking
The relationship between the human foot and the footwear going through the shoe last. A deep dive into the parameters used in the shoe last development covers production, analysis of length, width, size measurements and size conversion among EU, UK and USA systems.
Materials and components
Materials for uppers (fabrics, knit, synthetics, action leather) and linings, middle components (counters, toe boxes, interlinings), Bottom components (mid-soles, outsoles)
Shoe constructions
Overview of production process.
Upper and Footwear constructions: board lasted, strobel lasted, cemented outsoles, vulcanized and injection/direct attach.
Alternative/hybrid constructions derived from basic ones.

Hands-on sample making
Students will have the opportunity to work in the University of Oregon Sports Product Management Innovation Lab and technicians to learn about the shoemaking process by assembling an Arsutoria School sneaker.
Within this hands-on activity students will:
- sketch on the shoe last
- do last drafting
- learn about pattern making
- work on upper assembling by upper stitching
- complete 1 sample through lasting and sole attachment

The workshop will be held by Paolo Marenghi, Technical Director and senior professor at Arsutoria School together with Andrea Montagna, Technical Lead and mold making expert at APEGO and Greg Leedy, UO Master’s in Sports Product Management Instructor and Manager, Innovation Lab
Background
Attendees should have at least 2-3 years industry experience in order to fully take advantage of this advanced training.
