Introducing SBP – A Luxury Handbag Label by Arsutoria Alumna Purti Shah

Arsutoria alumna Purti Shah turned her passion for handbags into SBP, a luxury label that fuses Indian heritage textiles like Banarasi brocade and velvet with contemporary design. In this interview, she shares how her training at Arsutoria shaped her vision, the role of artisans in her brand, and her plans to expand into versatile, everyday styles while staying true to craftsmanship and tradition.

After studying business and gaining experience in the world of luxury retail with Louis Vuitton India, Purti decided to transform her lifelong passion for handbags into a profession. At Arsutoria School, she developed the technical expertise and creative vision needed to design and craft timeless pieces. Today, with SBP, she brings together Indian heritage textiles like Banarasi brocade and velvet with contemporary silhouettes, creating bags that embody both tradition and modern sophistication.

In this interview, we dive deeper into Purti Shah’s journey and discover more about SBP.

To begin with, tell us about your educational background prior to joining the Bag 1-Year Diploma program

I pursued my Bachelor’s in Business Administration and soon after, I began my journey in the world of luxury with a sales internship at Louis Vuitton India. That experience gave me invaluable insights into the art of luxury retail and strengthened my love for fine craftsmanship. Since bags have always intrigued me, I decided to channel that passion into expertise by joining Arsutoria’s 1-Year Diploma Program in Bags, where I could learn the technical depth and creative precision that go into making timeless handbags.

How do you feel that your training experience with us has shaped the designer and entrepreneur that you have become

My training experience gave me an in-depth understanding of the entire process of bag making — from construction techniques to material exploration. Beyond the technical skills, it also taught me how to build a collection creatively and cohesively, which became the foundation for shaping my vision. This holistic learning truly empowered me to take the leap and launch my own brand, blending craftsmanship with creativity.

It seems quite interesting the model that you have built up so can you tell us more about how you interact with artisans who are making your bags by hand?

At SBP, we work with a small team of highly skilled artisans who bring each design to life with their expertise. They are the backbone of our process, carefully shaping and crafting every bag with precision. Alongside them, we also collaborate with embroidery artisans, who create exquisite, detailed embroideries entirely by hand, adding a unique artistry to our pieces. Their craftsmanship ensures that every bag carries not just design, but also the soul of traditional skill blended with modern luxury.

More in depth, can you tell us more about the textiles that you are using?

For our collections, we work with luxurious velvets and pure Banarasi brocade, both chosen for their richness and timeless appeal. The Banarasi brocade in particular is very special — it is handwoven in Banaras using fine silk threads that are intricately interlaced to create elaborate motifs, often inspired by Mughal art and nature. This centuries-old weaving tradition brings a depth of heritage and artistry to our bags. When paired with plush velvets, the textiles create a striking balance of opulence and modern sophistication, allowing every piece to feel both classic and contemporary.

Is there a specific story behind your brand about your choice to use those textiles?

Yes, there is a story. Growing up, I was always fascinated by textiles that carried history and culture within them. Banarasi brocade in particular has always stood out to me — the way it’s woven with silk threads, the richness of its motifs, and the legacy of generations of artisans who have kept the craft alive. Choosing to incorporate it into my bags was my way of celebrating Indian heritage while reimagining it in a modern, global luxury context. Pairing it with velvets felt natural, as the textures complement each other beautifully and together they embody the timeless elegance and regal aura I want my brand to stand for.

On top of your current styles, do you think you shall be adding on more styles therefore constructions as the SPB brand grows? If so which ones are you considering?

Yes, absolutely. While our current styles focus strongly on luxury and occasion wear, I am also moving towards creating designs that can seamlessly fit into daily life. The idea is to develop styles that balance functionality with luxury — pieces that are versatile, easy to carry, and still make a statement. I’m particularly excited about introducing pop colours and contemporary silhouettes that bring a playful edge to the collection, while ensuring they remain true to SBP’s DNA of craftsmanship and detail. This way, we can offer our clients a spectrum — from timeless occasion bags to chic, everyday companions.
